loving it and longing to go…

The little island seemed to float on the dark lake-waters. Trees grew on it, and a little hill rose in the middle of it. It was a mysterious island, lonely and beautiful. All the children stood and gazed at it, loving it and longing to go to it. It looked so secret – almost magic.
“Well,” said Jack at last. “What do you think? Shall we run away, and live on the secret island?”
“Yes!” whispered all the children.

Listening to:  chatter, chatter, chatter… unrelenting chatter
Doing?  trying to drown it out, and considering a deserted island, somewhere, anywhere quiet…

wine of the universe…

Mystery is the wine of this universe. It makes us dizzy and makes us feel happy! Man needs enigma so that he can get rid of the dullness of the reality!

But conundrum?  Conundrum is just a fun word to repeat over and over again when no one’s listening.  Actual meaning is as puzzling as the need to chant the word.

I’m a conundrum.  Or an enigma.   I forget which.

Listening to:  nothing in particular it’s really quiet this evening.
Doing? Just finished feeding the Muse Cat, wondering what to fix for me.   Prolly nothing, since it hasn’t jumped out at me, and I can’t seem to get the taste buds corralled enough to make a decision.   I’m really missing vacation….

where have I been?

Inky:  Last day of vacation, tomorrow signals a return to reality.   Where have I been?  Somewhere very similar to the above.  No phones, no folk, no computers.   It was wonderful.

Today it’s raining, and I’m snuggled in my easy chair watching science channel, soup bubbling on the stove.   Tomorrow will be time enough to think about alarms, and early mornings…

time to think…

thinctanc-co-ukMaybe I don’t have enough to do. Maybe I have time to think too much. Why don’t we shut the whole house off for a few days and take a vacation?

Listening to: <the beep of an answering machine>  Inky isn’t home right now, it’s vacation Day #3 and she’s off doing, ummm ‘stuff’ (a gal has to have some mysteries). Please leave a message and she’ll get back to you by tomorrow.

That is, if she doesn’t pull a Jaws, sink the Titanic, and wind up on Gilligan’s Island.  The odds should be running 50/50 bout now…

like fireflies…

You see, women are like fires, like flames. Some women are like candles, bright and friendly. Some are like single sparks, or embers, like fireflies for chasing on summer nights. Some are like campfires, all light and heat for a night and willing to be left after. Some women are like hearth fires, not much to look at but underneath they are all warm red coal that burns a long, long while.

Listening to:  Newp, sorry not Owl City.   My earphones are being serenaded by  Back to December, Taylor Swift..

So this is me swallowing my pride
Standing in front of you saying I’m sorry for that night
And I go back to December all the time
It turns out freedom ain’t nothing but missing you
Wishing I’d realized what I had when you were mine

Doing?  Well it’s vacation – Day #2 – went for a long walk along the shore, earphone music blending with waves as memories skipped along the sand evading the waves.

I love the company of people, but I love my own company as well.

Sometimes I just want to be alone with me, letting my heart and mind play unfairly; unleashing old feelings, allowing them to run riot  so I can forgive, so I can forget.   Today was that kinda day…

this is the girl in your head…

You think fairy tales are only for girls? Here’s a hint – ask yourself who wrote them. I assure you, it wasn’t just the women. It’s the great male fantasy – all it takes is one dance to know that she’s the one. All it takes is the sound of her song from the tower, or a look at her sleeping face. And right away you know – this is the girl in your head, sleeping or dancing or singing in front of you. Yes, girls want their princes, but boys want their princesses just as much. And they don’t want a very long courtships. They want to know immediately.

Listening to: Doctor’s Orders, Carol Douglas

Doctor’s orders say there’s only one thing for me,
Nothing he can do cause only you can cure me
Says in my condition, love’s the best physician….

Doing?  taking a breather from Snoopy dancing around the living room and singing to the top of my lungs.   Know what today is?  Vacation – Day #1!

Definitely calls for Motown and Snoopy dancing, don’t ‘ca think?

good and sinful…

….was bad for me the same way too much coffee was, the same way too much chocolate was, the way everything good and sinful, sweet thing was…

Chocolate and coffee ? Together …whoever came up with that combination should have won a Nobel Peace Prize. Or at least a subscription to Reader’s Digest.

Listening to: the coffee pot sizzling…
Doing? Standing at the counter doing my first cup of coffee. I opened my eyes about thirty minutes ago and I can already tell… <sighs> it’s gonna be one of those days.

obsidian veined with gold…

Fantasy is silver and scarlet, indigo and azure, obsidian veined with gold and lapis lazuli. Reality is plywood and plastic, done up in mud brown and olive drab. Fantasy tastes of habaneros and honey, cinnamon and cloves, rare red meat and wines as sweet as summer. Reality is beans and tofu, and ashes at the end. Reality is the strip malls of Burbank, the smokestacks of Cleveland, a parking garage in Newark. Fantasy is the towers of Minas Tirith, the ancient stones of Gormenghast, the halls of Camelot. Fantasy flies on the wings of Icarus, reality on Southwest Airlines.

Listening to: Stop, Sam Brown

Time after time I’ve tried to walk away
But it’s not that easy when your soul is torn in two

Doing:  research….

took it apart, found the problem…

Log Entry: SOL 118

My conversation with NASA about the Water Reclaimer was boring and riddled with technical details. So I’ll paraphrase for you:

Me: “This is obviously a clog. How about I take it apart and check the internal tubing?”

NASA: (After about 5 hours of deliberation) “No. You’ll fuck it up and die.”

So I took it apart.

I told NASA what I did. Our (paraphrased) conversation was:

Me: “I took it apart, found the problem, and fixed it.”

NASA: “Dick.”

Doing? writing..
Listening to:  the quiet of late evening..

the intelligence of others..

Have you ever noticed that? We base our assessment of the intelligence of others almost entirely on how closely their thinking matches our own. I’m sure that there are people out there who violently disagree with me on most things, and I’m broad-minded enough to conceded that they might possibly not be completely idiots, but I much prefer the company of people who agree with me.

You might want to think about that.

Listening to: the front and side door chimes as folk come and go…
Doing?  The day job of course, bills they seem to never cease!

But there is light at the end of the tunnel, vacation starts in four days.  I must get the preparations done, what is time off without the proper stash of Glenlivet, olives, brie, fruit, a ‘Go Away, I’m Not Home’ sign, a clean office for writing, and plenty of coffee and vanilla cream…..

…and of course the Muse Cat’s creamy stash as well.  Mustn’t forget that….
